What is Motilium

The active component of the drug is domperidone, a substance that can quickly suppress nausea, normalize peristalsis, stool, and relieve signs of indigestion. The product is produced in several pharmaceutical forms:

  • film-coated tablets: white, biconvex, containing 10 mg of domperidone, packaged in blisters;
  • non-coated sublingual tablets with mint flavor;
  • syrup for children: a sweetish, thick, white, water-based liquid with a dosage of domperidone 1 mg per 1 ml, sold in glass bottles with a measuring syringe.

The tablet medicine contains auxiliary compounds: starch, povidone, stabilizers.

Similar drugs, their differences and costs

Analogs and synonyms of Motilium can often quite adequately replace the original, but only the replacement options should be selected by the attending physician, especially in the case of infants and children.

Ganaton

Ganaton belongs to the prokinetic group of drugs, which improve the motility of the gastric walls and accelerate the evacuation of food, eliminating severe symptoms caused by food retention. Motilium, in addition to these conditions, is also capable of providing an antiemetic effect.

What does it mean:

  1. To eliminate heartburn and belching, nausea and a feeling of fullness, epigastric pain, gastric or esophageal pathologies, you can take both Motilium and Ganaton, and the latter will even be somewhat more effective.
  2. But for the treatment of nausea and vomiting reactions provoked by medications, gastrointestinal pathologies or intestinal infections, digestive disorders, you need to use Motilium, and Ganaton will be useless in this situation.

Motilak

Motilak and Motilium are considered synonyms, since both drugs have the same active substance - domperidone.

In fact, Motilium and Motilak have the same therapeutic effect, but only Motilium is less likely to cause adverse reactions. If the patient is prone to various side effects, then it is better to choose Motilium for treatment.

Moreover, Motilak is produced only in tablet form, and Motilium is produced in suspension form especially for infants. Therefore, only Motilium is used in pediatrics.

Trimedat

The drug is a myotropic antispasmodic that regulates digestive motility and peristalsis.

Prescribed for gastrointestinal motility disorders, gastroesophageal reflux or dyspepsia, obstruction or irritable bowel syndrome. In children, Trimedat can be used from 3 years of age.

Trimedat belongs to a slightly different pharmaceutical group than Motilium, which is more effective as an antiemetic and other disorders in the activity of the upper gastrointestinal tract structures. Therefore, it is difficult to compare them.

Cerucal

The drug Cerucal has an anti-hiccup and anti-emetic effect, suppressing reflexes at the nervous system level.

  • The drug blocks serotonin and dopamine receptors.
  • In addition, Cerucal is prescribed to patients with hypotension or atony of intestinal structures, diabetic gastroparesis, digestive disorders, etc.
  • Cerucal in tablets is contraindicated for use in children, while Motilium in the form of syrup can be taken even by infants.

Espumisan

The medication Espumisan is intended to eliminate excess gas formation. It is produced in the form of a suspension and drops. In fact, the drug is a defoamer, eliminating bubbles and simplifying the removal of gases from the intestines.

For what diseases is Motilium needed?

The medicine helps restore well-being in the following pathologies:

  • stomach ulcer;
  • atonic bowel dysfunction;
  • flatulence;
  • hypokinetic dyskinesia of the gallbladder;
  • epigastric pain;
  • nausea, vomiting due to food or chemical intoxication;
  • digestive disorders due to taking medications, radiation therapy;
  • spontaneous constipation;
  • frequent regurgitation in children.

The drug moderately stimulates intestinal peristalsis, normalizing gastric functions and eliminating signs of dyspepsia. Domperidone suppresses dopamine activity, producing a mild antipsychotic effect. But, unlike other drugs, it does not lead to autonomic disorders.

The medicine quickly penetrates the blood through the mucous membranes and interacts with its proteins. After administration, Motilium cleanses the stomach cavity, intestinal lumen, binds and neutralizes toxic substances. It is completely excreted from the body with intestinal contents after 12–24 hours, without accumulating in tissues.

Analogues of Motilium for children and adults

Motilium suspension for children and tablets are used to treat digestive disorders. They eliminate nausea, vomiting, pain and heaviness in the stomach, and a feeling of fullness after eating. The cost of the drug starts from 550 ₽ for 30 tablets or a bottle.

The medicine is expensive and not available to all segments of the population, especially with a long course of treatment. The issue of selecting Motilium analogues should be discussed with your doctor.

Indications for use of Motilium

The medicine is used to eliminate nausea and vomiting caused by organ pathologies, diseases, dietary errors, and the use of medications.

Since Motilium eliminates food stagnation in the stomach and enhances intestinal motility, it can be used to eliminate:

  • heartburn;

  • nausea;
  • vomiting;
  • feeling bloated and full after meals;
  • flatulence;
  • epigastric pain.

Tablets are used in children weighing more than 35 kg and adults, suspension - in small children.

Motilium - instructions for use

The medicine is taken 3-4 times a day, 1-2 tablets. The syrup is used for its intended purpose, the dosage is calculated based on the child’s weight and the presence of concomitant kidney diseases.

The medicine should not be used for moderate to severe liver diseases or gastrointestinal bleeding. Since the drug negatively affects the functional parameters of the liver, it cannot be used simultaneously with hepatotoxic drugs, i.e.

medications harmful to this organ. The list includes antibiotics (Erythromycin, Clarithromycin), antifungals (Ketoconazole, Fluconazole), heart drugs (Amiodarone, Diltiazem, Verapamil), etc.

A detailed list is provided in the insert in the “Interactions” section.

Motilium before or after meals

The medicine is taken before meals to prevent food stagnation and improve intestinal motility. Regular tablets are washed down with water; dispersible tablets with the Express attachment dissolve in 2–3 seconds in the oral cavity.

The suspension can be taken as directed. First you need to shake gently, avoiding foaming.

Analogues of Motilium

The medicine is used to eliminate many dyspeptic symptoms. The cost of 30 tablets is quite high. For an adult they last up to 10 days. Motilium substitutes differ in active substances, pharmacological group, and indications. Depending on the symptoms and cause, the following groups may be prescribed:

  • enzyme preparations;
  • synonyms – analogues according to INN;
  • antidiarrheals;
  • antacids;
  • antispasmodics;
  • sorbents;
  • agents that regulate intestinal motility.

The choice of a cheap Motilium substitute should be entrusted to a gastroenterologist to determine the cause of dyspepsia and comprehensive treatment.

Motilium and structural analogues can be used on their own for up to 28 days without a doctor’s prescription, provided there are no side effects or worsening of the condition.

How to take Motilium tablets

Adults are recommended to take 1 pill three times a day, 15–20 minutes before meals. The coated tablets are washed down with cool or warm water. Sublingual - placed under the tongue until completely dissolved. If necessary, the single dose is increased 2–3 times. The maximum number of tablets per day is 8 pcs. It is allowed to take the medicine before bedtime.

For children, treatment with Motilium in tablets is recommended from 6–7 years of age: 1 tablet 2–3 times a day. For body weights less than 35 kg, it is recommended to use a suspension of the drug.

Description of Motilak

Motilak is an antiemetic drug based on domperidone. Produced by Veropharm in Russia. Available in tablet form. Affects the peristalsis of the stomach and duodenum. Increases the tone of the esophageal sphincter. Prevents the occurrence of nausea and vomiting. Improves stomach function, speeding up emptying.

Domperidone is a prokinetic agent. It is a dopamine receptor antagonist. Domperidone accelerates the peristalsis of the stomach and intestines and provokes the release of prolactin. The substance is used to normalize the function of the gastrointestinal tract.

Contraindications

Motilak is contraindicated if intolerance to the active ingredient, namely domperidone, has previously been established. It is also not used when there is an allergy or hypersensitivity to the excipients in the composition.

It is not recommended to use the medicine when stimulation of gastric motility may worsen the condition. The drug is contraindicated in case of gastric bleeding, perforation and organ obstruction. Also, it should not be used when there is prolactinoma.

Animal studies have shown that domperidone is not teratogenic. Motilak can be used in the first trimester of pregnancy, when the expected benefits outweigh the possible risks. During lactation, it is unknown whether the concentration of domperidone that enters the milk has a negative effect on the child. It is recommended to temporarily stop breastfeeding when there is a need to undergo treatment with Motilac.

Side effects

Motilak is well tolerated. In rare cases, intestinal spasms have been reported. Extrapyramidal effects may appear in adults, but are temporary and disappear completely after treatment is stopped. Motilac can lead to an increase in plasma prolactin levels. This phenomenon can already provoke gynecomastia and galactorrhea.

There is a possibility of allergic manifestations. Cases of urticaria and rash were recorded.

Dosage

Motilak is taken before meals. For nausea and vomiting – 20 mg 3-4 times. For frequently recurring symptoms of dyspepsia - 10 mg 3-4 times. The dose may be doubled. For kidney disease, the medicine is taken no more than 2 times a day with a possible reduction in dosage.

In case of overdose, extrapyramidal reactions, drowsiness, and spatial disorientation are observed. Activated carbon is prescribed for treatment. Anticholinergics may be effective for extrapyramidal reactions.

In case of renal failure, the drug is prescribed with caution. During long-term treatment, you need to be regularly examined by a doctor and be monitored.

Who is it suitable for?

Motilak is prescribed for dyspeptic symptoms associated with slow gastric emptying, esophagitis, and reflux. The drug helps with heaviness in the stomach, a feeling of fullness, and pain in the epigastric zone. Also indicated for heartburn with or without reflux.

Effective for vomiting of organic, functional, infectious origin. A special indication is the treatment of Parkinson's disease with dopamine antagonists, which leads to nausea and vomiting.

Side effects of Motilium

The drug increases the synthesis of the hormone prolactin. In some cases, this can cause a short-term disruption of the menstrual cycle and provoke the development of gynemastia. Occasionally during treatment the following are possible:

  • decreased appetite;
  • dryness or unpleasant taste in the mouth;
  • increased drowsiness;
  • increased spasms in the intestines.

If any undesirable symptoms occur, you should consult your doctor.

Which drug is better

Motilak and Motilium are analogues. They have the same indications. Side effects and contraindications differ, so you need to carefully read the instructions for each drug. Both drugs can be prescribed for the shortest possible course.

Motilium is more suitable for children, as is the case for women during pregnancy. The suspension can even be used to treat infants.

Motilak costs almost twice as much, as it is produced in Russia. Motilium is a Belgian drug.

When you need to quickly relieve nausea, you can use Motilak dissolving tablets. If the symptoms of dyspepsia are constant, you need to be examined by a doctor who will select the most effective and safe medications for your particular case.

When is Motilium contraindicated?

It is prohibited to use the medicine:

  • in case of danger of perforation of a gastric ulcer, development of internal bleeding;
  • in case of intestinal obstruction;
  • in case of dysfunction, neoplasms in the pituitary gland;
  • prolactinoma;
  • severe kidney or liver damage;
  • individual intolerance to any of the components of the drug.

If you are allergic to Motilium, itching, hyperemia, rash, lacrimation, and swelling of the mucous membranes are likely to occur. In such cases, discontinuation of therapy and replacement of the drug with another is required.

How does Motilium interact with other drugs?

During the period of using Motilium, it is advisable to stop using antacids and proton pump inhibitors - drugs that reduce the acidity of gastric juice. Simultaneous use slows down the action of Motilium and reduces its absorption.

Antimycotic drugs and drugs from the macrolide group inhibit the metabolism of domperidone. This is important to consider in cases of impaired renal and liver function.

When undergoing treatment with Ketoconazole, Azithromycin, Erythromycin and inhibitors of the CYP3A4 isoenzyme, Motilium should be discontinued. Otherwise, the risk of heart failure increases.

How can I replace Motilium?

The most famous analogues and generics of the drug:

  • Domrid;
  • Domidon;
  • Domperidone Hexal;
  • Motinorm;
  • Motoricum;
  • Motilak;
  • Peridonium.

You should not change the medicine to an alternative one on your own. In addition to differences in dosage, some of them have a wider list of contraindications; not all are approved for use in pediatrics.
