Effect of the drug
According to the study, it has been proven that ursodeoxycholic acid is quickly absorbed in the intestine and is integrated into liver cells and provides them with protection from various negative factors, including toxic and alcohol damage. When taking the medicine, congestion in the organ decreases and the removal of acids accelerates.
Ursosan, the instructions for use emphasize this, has a choleretic effect. The active substance is capable of:
- Reduce cholesterol production in the liver and slow down its absorption in the intestines.
- Reduce the saturation of bile with cholesterol.
- Increase the content of bile acids.
- Increase the solubility of cholesterol in the biliary system.
Indications for use
Ursosan 250 mg capsules instructions for use focus on this; they should be taken only after consultation with a doctor. Only a specialist can determine the presence of indications for treatment with the drug and select the optimal regimen of use based on the patient’s condition.
Most often, Ursosan, whose price is affordable, is prescribed to maintain health in uncomplicated gallstone disease. Ursodeoxycholic acid is considered an effective remedy at the initial stage of stone formation against the background of increased crystallization of organic and inorganic compounds in the gallbladder and biliary tract. Ursosan is prescribed, the instructions indicate this, in order to prevent recurrent stone formation after cholecystectomy.
Other common indications for using the drug:
- Hepatitis in a chronic form of any origin.
- Impaired liver function caused by alcohol abuse or appearing against the background of the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.
- Biliary dyskinesia, characterized by decreased motility.
- Biliary reflux gastritis, when bile is thrown into the stomach of the duodenum.
- Cystic fibrosis of the liver, which is a hereditary disease.
- Primary biliary cirrhosis, which is a severe disease that is associated with scarring of the liver tissue.
Admission rules
Ursosan capsules, the use of which is carried out exclusively in accordance with the doctor’s recommendations, should be swallowed with a sufficient amount of liquid. However, dosage regimens may vary depending on the type of disease. The question of how to take Ursosan before or after meals is also decided by the doctor individually. According to reviews, when taken correctly and in accordance with the prescription, good results can be obtained.
Ursosan 250 mg instructions for use indicate this; for the treatment of diffuse liver diseases and cholelithiasis, 2-5 capsules are prescribed. You need to take the medicine to obtain confirmation of the dissolution of the stones, and this should be done for another 3 months in order to prevent the re-formation of stones. The exact dosage is calculated - 10-15 mg per 1 kg of patient’s body weight. In this case, taking the medicine:
- For cholelithiasis, it is carried out once before bedtime.
- In diffuse liver diseases, it is divided into 2-3 times during the day.
The instructions for use of the drug contain other recommendations. In most cases, the dosage is calculated based on the patient's body weight. But in any case, they need to be agreed with the doctor. Long-term treatment is indicated for primary biliary cirrhosis. In other cases, temporary recommendations must be followed. But it is always necessary to monitor the presence of a positive effect.
The dosage is calculated individually for children over 2 years of age. Sometimes the drug is used to treat severe jaundice in newborns. To do this, a quarter of a capsule will be prescribed every day. Before use, the powder is first diluted in breast milk or water. Once the desired result is achieved, the course of treatment is 10 days; if necessary, it can be extended to 2 weeks.

Ursosan in complex therapy of GERD
Constant exposure to aggressive factors in the stomach and esophagus leads to damage to the mucous membrane of these organs. Changes in the mucous membrane include foveal hyperplasia, edema and proliferation of smooth muscle cells of the lamina propria. The dominance of unconjugated bile acids during therapy with proton pump inhibitors suggests an increase in their cytotoxic effects precisely in conditions of adequate drug reduction of intragastric acid formation. These data demonstrate the relevance of prescribing ursodeoxycholic acid drugs, which displace toxic fractions from the general pool of bile acids in favor of non-toxic ones. Thus, when taking the drug Ursosan orally, the proportion of ursodeoxycholic acid in the total pool of bile acids increases from 5 to 60%. In combination with this, ursodeoxycholic acid increases the excretion of hydrophobic bile acids into the intestines. Under the influence of Ursosan, hydrophilic substances of bile acids predominate in the refluxate, which irritate the mucous membrane of the stomach and esophagus to a lesser extent. In addition, ursodeoxycholic acid is integrated into the phospholipid layer of the plasmalemma, making it more resistant to damaging factors (hydrophobic bile acids), which ensures the cytoprotective effect of Ursosan. Prevention of apoptosis of epithelial cells induced by hydrophobic bile acids leads to a reduction in clinical symptoms and endoscopic signs of damage to the mucous membrane of the stomach and esophagus. The choleretic effect of Ursosan also seems extremely important. A decrease in the lithogenic index of bile leads to an improvement in its evacuation from the gallbladder. While taking the drug, the emptying of the gallbladder is normalized in response to natural food stimulants, which ensures the qualitative participation of bile in the digestive processes and prevents the release of bile during the interdigestive period, and therefore reduces the risk of duodenogastroesophageal reflux. In addition, bile plays the role of a kind of stabilizer of intestinal microbiocenosis, and also stimulates the contractile activity of the small and large intestines. The latter leads to a decrease in the severity of flatulence as one of the important factors in increasing intra-abdominal pressure, leading to a decrease in intestinal propulsive activity. The recommended dose of Ursosan for the treatment of patients with GERD is 500 mg per day. It is preferable to take Ursosan one capsule before breakfast and lunch (Maev I.V. et al.).

Contraindications include:
- Liver cirrhosis in the stage of decompensation.
- Liver and/or kidney failure.
It is not recommended to take the medicine in the 1st trimester of pregnancy and during lactation. Treatment of children with the drug should be carried out only in exceptional cases.
No cases of drug overdose have been recorded. Adverse reactions during treatment with urososan may include diarrhea. In rare cases, abdominal pain has been reported.
Interaction with other drugs
- When taking ursodeoxycholic acid and antacids containing aluminum or ion-forming resins simultaneously, the effectiveness of the drug may decrease (let's take antacids and ursosan with an interval of 2-2.5 hours);
- When taking ursodeoxycholic acid and neomycin, estrogens, progestins and lipid-lowering drugs simultaneously, the ability of the drug to dissolve cholesterol stones may decrease;
- When ursodeoxycholic acid is taken simultaneously with cyclosporine, the absorption of the latter increases and a dosage adjustment of cyclosporine may be necessary.
