"Kvamatel": composition, description
The drug is available in the form of tablets and lyophilized powder, on the basis of which an aqueous solution for injection is made (administered intravenously). The active ingredient is famotidine. Auxiliary compounds - silicon dioxides, lactose in the form of monohydrate, talc and others. Each tablet and each bottle of powder contains a single dose of the active substance in the amount of 20 mg.
Each pack contains 14 pcs. tablets. The powder is produced in small bottles of 5 pieces. packaged. They also come with a physiological solution of sodium chloride with a concentration of 0.9% (volume of 1 ampoule - 5 ml).
The product is characterized by antiulcer effects. The active component affects the walls of the stomach, reduces the secretion of gastric juice, the most important component of which is hydrochloric acid. Moreover, this does not affect other digestive organs, including the liver and pancreas.
Today the drug is available in 2 dosage forms:
- "Kvamatel" (20 mg of active ingredient in 1 tablet).
- "Kvamatel Mini" (10 mg of active ingredient in 1 tablet).
Both drugs have the same active ingredient and are used to treat ulcerative lesions of the gastrointestinal tract. Moreover, Kvamatel Mini tablets are also used for heartburn. Moreover, it eliminates not only the symptoms, but the causes of the disease.
The therapeutic effect lasts for 10-12 hours. To improve your well-being, a single dose is enough. The active substances are absorbed through the walls of the small intestine and utilized in the liver. They are excreted in the urine mainly in chemically unchanged form.
Compound
One coated tablet contains 20 mg of the main substance famotidine and auxiliary components: lactose monohydrate, povidone K90, colloidal silicon dioxide, corn starch, magnesium stearate, talc, sodium carboxymethyl starch.
One bottle of the drug in the form of a lyophilized powder, from which an injection solution is prepared, contains 20 mg of the main substance famotidine . The auxiliary component is a solution of sodium chloride 0.9% in a 5 ml ampoule.
Indications and contraindications
The product is used in the presence of such diseases:
- ulcerative lesions of the stomach and/or duodenum (the drug is used to prevent relapse, as well as during exacerbation);
- gastroduodenitis of erosive type;
- prevention and treatment of damage to the gastrointestinal tract of various origins;
- prevention and treatment of uncomplicated stages of pathologies.
In some cases, the drug cannot be taken
- children under 17 years of age inclusive;
- pregnancy period;
- breastfeeding period;
- individual intolerance to the main or additional components, allergic reactions.
The drug should be used with caution in the presence of kidney and liver diseases, including cirrhosis.
Contraindications for use
- lactation, pregnancy;
- childhood;
- intolerance to the drug and other histamine H2 receptor blockers.
Particular care is required when treating patients with Kvamatel who suffer from renal or liver failure , liver cirrhosis , accompanied by portosystemic encephalopathy .
Side effects
In some cases, the use of Kvamatel can lead to side effects. They are mainly associated with the organs of the digestive system:
- liver disorders;
- loss of appetite;
- nausea;
- vomiting;
- constipation;
- dry mouth.
Side effects can also occur in the nervous, cardiovascular, and immune systems:

Therapy with Kvamatel is stopped slowly, with a gradual reduction in the dose - with a sudden cessation of taking the drug, a withdrawal syndrome occurs.
During treatment, it is undesirable to consume foods and medications that irritate the gastric mucosa. Also during this period, it is recommended to refrain from driving a car and performing work that requires high concentration and quick psychomotor reactions.
Instructions for use "Kvamatel"
The tablets are taken orally with water, without crushing or dissolving. The daily dosage and total duration of treatment are determined by the doctor.
When taking Kvamatel mini tablets for heartburn, the standard dosage is 1 pc. per day. Moreover, it should be taken an hour before meals. If the attacks of heartburn are severe, the dosage can be increased to 2 tablets, but no more. The course of treatment lasts up to 14 days in a row. If, a week after starting, your health has not improved, stop taking it and consult a doctor.
The solution is administered intravenously only in a hospital (hospital). The powder is dissolved in a 0.9% sodium chloride solution and slowly instilled into a vein - a total duration of 2 minutes. Mixing with solution for infusion is also possible. Then intravenous administration is carried out for 15-30 minutes.
Important!
During the course of treatment, you should completely stop drinking alcoholic beverages. In case of overdose, gastric lavage is necessary. Therapy is symptomatic, depending on the type of complications.
Quamatel®
The tablets are taken orally, whole, without chewing, with a glass of water, regardless of meals.
Exacerbation of peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum
The drug is taken 40 mg once a day before bedtime or 20 mg 2 times a day (morning and evening). The duration of treatment is 4-8 weeks. The duration of treatment may be shorter if endoscopic examination reveals early healing of the ulcers. Most patients experience healing within 4 weeks. In patients who do not experience complete recovery after 4 weeks, it is recommended to continue treatment for an additional 4 weeks.
Gastric ulcer without malignancy
The recommended dose is 40 mg 1 time/day before bedtime. Treatment should be continued for 4-8 weeks. The duration of treatment may be shorter if endoscopic examination reveals early healing of the ulcers.
Prevention of exacerbation of peptic ulcer disease
20 mg 1 time per day before bedtime.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease
The drug is taken 20 mg 2 times a day (morning and evening) for 6-12 weeks. If gastroesophageal reflux disease is accompanied by esophagitis, the recommended dose of Kvamatel® is 20-40 mg/day for 12 weeks.
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
In patients who have not previously received drugs to reduce gastric secretion, the initial dose is usually 20 mg every 6 hours. Further, the dose should be selected individually depending on the patient’s condition.
Patients using other H2 receptor blockers. can immediately switch to using Kvamatel® at a dose higher than the recommended initial dose of 20 mg every 6 hours.
The duration of use of the drug depends on the clinical condition of the patient.
Prevention of aspiration of gastric juice during general anesthesia (Mendelssohn syndrome)
The drug is taken in a dose of 40 mg in the evening before surgery or in the morning on the day of surgery.
Special patient groups
Patients with kidney failure
Since famotidine is excreted primarily by the kidneys, precautions should be taken in patients with severe renal impairment. If creatinine clearance is <30 ml/min or serum creatinine is >3 mg/100 ml, then the daily dose should be reduced to 20 mg or the interval between doses should be increased to 36-48 hours.
Children and teenagers (up to 18 years old)
The effectiveness and safety of the drug when used in children and adolescents has not been established.
Elderly patients (over 65 years old)
No dose change is required.
Interaction
Kvamatel does not affect the biotransformation of drugs whose metabolism is related to the cytochrome P450 .
Concomitant use with Ketoconazole may reduce its absorption by changing the pH formula of gastric juice.
A decrease in the absorption of famotidine was noted when the drug was combined with antacid drugs .
Combined use with drugs containing probenecid reduces the excretion of famotidine .
